Oral Cancer Screening

Early Detection Saves Lives

Protecting your health means looking beyond just teeth and gums — it’s a commitment we uphold at Dufour Dental Hygiene.

Oral cancer screening is a vital part of every dental hygiene appointment, because early detection can make all the difference.

Each year, thousands of new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed in Canada. Research shows that up to 80% of these could be detected early through regular screenings.

By identifying potential signs as early as possible, we help improve treatment outcomes and increase survival rates.

Why Oral Cancer Screening is Important

Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth, including:

  • Lips
  • Tongue
  • Gums
  • Roof and floor of the mouth
  • Cheeks and throat

In its early stages, oral cancer may not cause obvious symptoms.
That’s why regular professional screenings are critical — they allow us to detect subtle changes you might not notice yourself.

Early detection leads to earlier treatment, less invasive procedures, and much better survival rates.

How We Perform Oral Cancer Screening

During your dental hygiene appointment, your hygienist will carefully examine:

  • The inside of your mouth, including the tongue, cheeks, gums, and palate
  • The back of your throat
  • The head and neck area, feeling for any unusual lumps or tissue changes

We look for:

  • Red or white patches
  • Sores that do not heal
  • Unusual lumps, bumps, or thickened areas
  • Persistent pain, numbness, or difficulty swallowing

If any areas of concern are identified, we will guide you in seeking prompt further evaluation by a dental or medical professional.

Who Should Be Screened?

Everyone should receive regular oral cancer screenings, but certain factors may increase your risk, including:

  • Tobacco use (smoking or smokeless)
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • A history of oral HPV infection
  • Excessive sun exposure (for lip cancers)
  • A personal or family history of cancer

Even without known risk factors, oral cancer can still develop — which is why we screen every client, every visit.
